GREENSBORO — Ragsdale scored 18 second-half points, including Brad Davis’ 33-yard field goal with 5:52 remaining, to lift the Tigers to a 24-21 victory over Northwest Guilford at R.L. Billings Stadium on Friday.
The win is No. 3 Ragsdale’s seventh straight, and puts the Tigers (8-1, 4-0) alone atop the Piedmont Triad 4-A, while the homecoming loss snaps a four-game winning streak for No. 6 Northwest (6-3, 3-1)....(read more)
Davis’ fourth-quarter kick was his third field goal of the night. The other two came in the first half from distances of 29 and 32 yards, respectively, and was all the points that Ragsdale could muster as it trailed 14-6 at intermission.
The Tigers scored two second-half touchdowns, one on D-onovan Smith’s six-yard run in the third quarter followed by a two-point conversion and the other on Barry Brown’s 3-yard scamper in the fourth, to pull even at 21-21 with 11:19 remaining.
“Tackling was our Achilles’ heel tonight,” Northwest coach Joe Woodruff said. “We missed some tackles, and we had penalties that killed drives.”
Northwest quarterback Matt Pawlowski completed eight passes on 14 attempts, including two long touchdowns of 53 yards to Ryan Overcash and 94 yards to Reid Baxter.
Baxter also scored on a 10-yard run to put the Vikings ahead 7-0 in the first quarter.
Brown led all rushers, carrying 14 times for 155 yards, with 90 of those coming in the second half.
“We saw on film that they ran a lot of (line)backers, and we ran some stunts and ran our zone offense,” said Brown. “We knew this was a big game coming in here with it being their homecoming, and we’ve been working hard all year long in practice to do well in big games like this.”
Ragsdale quarterback Luke Heavner completed 15 of 22 passes for 180 yards, a two-point conversion and no touchdowns.
“Our defense came up big tonight in the second half,” said Ragsdale coach Tommy Norwood. “We’re playing a lot of sophomores on defense, and not a lot of seniors. We’ve played in a lot of big football games, and I’m proud of our kids tonight, because I feel like they took advantage of some opportunities.”
