The Person Rockets did well in correcting one problem area last week but another continued to haunt them.

Unlike the loss at George Washington two weeks ago, big plays allowed were not the deciding factor in last Friday’s 14-9 home-opening loss to Halifax at Rocket Stadium.

Overall, the defense played well enough to win but turnovers proved to be Person’s downfall.

Over the past two games, the Rockets have turned the ball over 10 times — six in last week’s game, including two costly mistakes in the red zone, one of those a goal-line fumble — and head coach Lou Geary knows that simply can’t happen when the 1-2 Rockets travel to Jamestown to take on the 4A powerhouse Ragsdale Tigers this Friday night at 7:30.

Subtract the giveaways, and the Rockets, who...
produced over 300 yards of offense (249 through the air) against Halifax, could very well have defeated the Comets by two touchdowns. Quarterback Jonathan Quick had a career high in passing yardage, and Joseph Downey and Tyrone Woods both had over 100 yards receiving.

So protecting the football will be of the utmost importance this week.

“We think our [offensive] scheme is fine. We just need to learn how to carry the ball properly, especially when we’re running in traffic,” said Geary, whose team fumbled it away four times last week. “I think we can learn a lot from the Halifax game even though we lost. The coaching staff is proud of the team for fighting to the very end. We’ve implemented some new drills to help reinforce the importance of protecting the ball.”

Below is an article from the Roxboro Courier on the upcoming game.

Ragsdale, which visited Rocket Stadium and ...beat Person 35-7 a year ago, is coming off a 13-1 season and third-round playoff appearance in 2009. The defending Piedmont Triad Conference champion Tigers are off to a 3-1 start this fall and don’t appear to be any less formidable.

Senior quarterback Luke Heavner has thrown for 605 yards and five touchdowns. He has three receivers with over 100 yards through the air. The Tigers have also amassed 586 yards on the ground, all amounting to 1,191 total yards of offense through their first four contests.

Senior tailback Barry Brown has led the way in the rushing game with 196 yards on 44 carries. The players’ familiarity with the program and the style of play, due in no small part to the long tenure of head coach Tommy Norwood, has had a lot to do with Ragsdale’s success over the years.
