Be the first to comment on this story. KERNERSVILLE — It took almost all of four quarters, but Luke Heavner finally showed the value of a senior signal caller.
The Ragsdale quarterback had only completed six passes all game in a stagnant showing by the Tiger offense, but apparently all he needed was a little pressure.
With a shade over 3 minutes left on the clock and his team down 7-3, Heavner found his efficiency and marched Ragsdale (6-1) 65 yards for the game-winning score, ...
a drive that finished with a 4-yard strike to Anthony Stewart to complete a 10-7 victory against East Forsyth (3-4).
“I looked at the offensive line and said, 'If you give me time, we’re going to put the ball in the end zone,’ ” Heavner said of the final drive. “That’s exactly what they did. They played great up front and we put it in.”
Heavner accounted for 54 of the 65 yards on the final drive, and his favorite target in the final sequence was Deshawn Shouse, who East Forsyth left wide open underneath. Shouse caught three passes to help Ragsdale keep the chains moving, as the Tigers methodically took the back down the field with small chunks of yardage.
No single play totaled more than 12 yards on Ragsdale’s final possession.
“I knew we were playing horrible, but it’s all about the way you finish,” Shouse said.
All the scoring came after an ugly first half that saw an embarrassment of mistakes from both teams.

East Forsyth and Ragsdale combined to fumble eight times and throw three interceptions before intermission. They had more than 100 yards of penalties in the half, and there were 19 total penalties in the game. Ragsdale committed 13 of those.
Ragsdale coach Tommy Norwood lit into his players in his postgame speech and was clearly unsatisfied at the mental errors his upperclassmen made most of the game.
Heavner was quick to admit the Tigers were sloppy most of the game and deserved the criticism from their coach, but he was a whole lot more happy to come out with a win rather than a loss.
“That’s the thing about being a quarterback, you’ve got to be a leader and be even keeled the whole time,” Heavner said.
The last-second score stunned an East Forsyth squad that had otherwise stymied Heavner all game.
The Eagles went ahead on a Ray McCloud six-yard score with 9 minutes to go in the game, and they had allowed Ragsdale to enter the red zone once.
